Taormina - Pearl of Sicily - The art course of the famous Italian artist Lorenzo Chinich
Moderator: Professor Zhu Wei
Speaker: Francisco Chinich
On May 22, 2023, after the "Summer Dream" art festival - Dialogue with the Master series activities were interrupted due to the epidemic, we finally met with you again. Today we bring you a wonderful lecture entitled "The Artistic Life of Italian Art Master Lorenzo Chinnici", hosted by Professor Zhu Wei, Executive Director of the Lee Cheng Dao Center for Science and Art. Francesco Chinnici, son of the maestro Lorenzo, will give the lecture.

In the lecture, Francisco first introduced his father Lorenzo, a well-known painter from Sicily, who was born in a poor family and was dependent on his mother as a child. He lost the vision in his left eye at the age of 40, and for more than two decades, his right eye has been able to see only one-fifth of normal vision due to macular degeneration. The pain of living in the dark for a long time has not let him lose his passion for creation, and this year, at the age of 81, he is still writing. In his works, the traditional life of Sicily, the natural scenery, and the local customs and customs of all parts of Italy are the true expression of his inner emotional world.
Lorenzo was influenced by the Italian painter Renato Guttuso, but did not systematically study any academic school. "He likes to pursue his inner freedom and make his own art," says Francisco.

Francisco then began to show and explain Lorenzo's paintings, from aloes on the beach, cacti in the courtyard, boats in the fishing harbor to sunlit alleys, students can enjoy the scenery of Sicily; From industrious shoemakers to farmers making tomato paste, you can also feel the traditional industry and life in Italy.

"Lorenzo's works are modern art". Professor Zhu Wei explained to the students in a concise way: "The development of art history is divided into three stages, classical art emphasizes the realization of visual reality in modeling, modern art breaks the normal visual habits and emphasizes different forms, languages and artists' personalities, while the core value of contemporary art is' idea is form 'and focuses more on ideas beyond the scope of vision." Lorenzo's works are modern art, and his works do not look so perfect in technology, but because of this, there is no technical barrier between the soul and art in his works, and he is not influenced by the so-called academic school in the old Western tradition. He has a distinct artistic personality and an innate feeling and intuition for the foolishness of art. That's why his work is so moving and powerful."

Professor Zhu Wei believes that under the influence of examination-oriented education, Chinese art education is more technical education, and most of them have become highly skilled craftsmen. As a result, the works lack appeal, and few people can point to the people's heart without any pretentiousness like the Italian artist's works.
There is no equal between good technology and art, and art and mind should not be separated by too much technology. This is a revelation to the current Chinese art education.
The teachers and students of the University of Science and Technology had the honor to appreciate the style of the works of the Italian master of modern art, personally experienced how the master transformed his own mind directly into artistic expression, and understood the past and present of world art with an international height and vision, which not only greatly improved their cognition and understanding of art, but also triggered profound thinking. The students raised their own questions and opinions about art, and interacted with Professor Francisco and Professor Zhu Wei. The scene was very warm.

Francesco said: "Italy is the birthplace of the Renaissance, China has a deep cultural heritage, it is very important to protect their own culture." In this century, our cultures have all been lost. My father thought it was important to know who we were, where we came from and where we were going." This event is not only a collision of art, but also a window to understand the differences between the cultural life of the two sides, and then inherit and protect their own culture.

Through Francesco's colorful speeches, the students had a taste of Italy, a country full of art, history and culture, which greatly improved their ability to appreciate art, broadened their horizons and opened their minds. It opens the door of artistic perceptual thinking for science and engineering students who are good at scientific rational thinking. It is an in-depth practical activity to carry out the theory of science and art integration proposed by Mr. Li Zhengdao, and it is another supplement to the concept of science and education integration of the University of Science and Technology, and has made contributions to promoting the cultivation of more creative world-class scientists in China. This is the significance of the lecture held by the Li Zhengdao Science and Art Center of the University of Science and Technology.
Another part of the Dialogue with Masters series is a double solo exhibition by Italian modern art master Lorenzo Chinich and international contemporary artist Professor Zhu Wei, Executive Director of the Li Chengdao Centre for Science and Art, which opened on 23 May. The exhibition will be held on the 1st and 3rd floors of the East Auditorium of the Yanqi Lake Campus of the University of Science and Technology until the end of August.
The event was jointly organized by the Li Zhengdao Science and Art Center of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Youth League Committee, the Education Foundation of the University of Science and Technology, and the Student Affairs Office.
